If we are going to solve for poverty we can't just build great schools, we must build great communities.

Derwin is the co-founder and CEO of Gestalt Community Schools (GCS), a charter management organization that develops and manages the growth of high-performing, community-based charter schools in Tennessee. In partnership with the Power Center CDC and the City of Memphis, GCS is redeveloping 43 acres of blighted property in the Hickory Hill community, transforming it into a mixed-use development anchored by its founding school, Power Center Academy.

Derwin has earned a BA in Psychology from Emory University and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Hollins University. Derwin is also a Pahara-Aspen Fellow and a Broad Academy Fellow.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
