Urbanized County”

Pinellas Room, Heritage Village
James Anthony Schnur
Immediate Past President, Pinellas County Historical Society
During the 2015-2016 year, both Heritage Village and the Pinellas County Historical Society(PCHS) celebrate their fortieth anniversary. The first four “Speaking of History” programs retrace the history of the Village and the structures that moved to our site.
The third program traces the growth of Heritage Village between the mid-1980s and the end of the twentieth century. During this period, many features were added on site that allowed for the expansion of educational programs and interpretive exhibits. As new urban communities and developments continued to transform the county, the Village became the location for structures that faced new threats, such as the H.C. Smith Mercantile Store, the Lowe House, the McMullen House, and Union Academy. Through community access television and other outreach efforts, county staff and many of the docents at Heritage Village shared their love of history through oral history interviews and a popular television program, Pinellas Past.
The Village and Society also worked with nearby communities, such as the Baskins-Dansville-Ridgecrest area, to preserve their memories.
