Friday 21st January - Day 3 of construction and the cake is finally being layered onto the boards. Paris andher Dream Team are racing the clock, constructing the main shape of the Opera House layer by layer, in delicious chocolate mud cake! You have never seen cake like this before people. The volunteers are working with lightning speed. Half of them were loading the mud cake onto the wooden boards, and the other half were spreading dollops of ganache in between each slab of cake. This is Planet Cake's version of bricks and mortar. It is fascinating to see this cake come to life, even if it is a bit bizarre seeing a burnt umber version of the usually pearly white Opera House. Time is of the essence, as they have to have the majority of all the sails erected in cake by tomorrow. Then, the real fun starts, with shaping the Opera House to the exact shape, and covering the whole structure in fondant. This is not a test for the faint hearted...it is big, it is messy....and it could all go horribly wrong. Oh, and did we mention that is over 30 degrees outside? If Paris and her team do manage to make the cake in the air-conditioned, cosy confines of Planet Cake HQ, there is a whole other challenge of transporting it to the location on Australia Day. Will the ganache last, or will there be a molten eruption of epic chocolatey proportions? Tune in tomorrow for your next cake fix.
