Hettie the Hen tells it how it is! When you've heard what she has to say, you will definitely think twice about your choice of eggs.

Nine year old James Watson Gandy has realised every child's dream - to star in a cartoon. He won a competition, run by RSPCA Freedom Food and Hamleys. Children were asked to consider the welfare needs of hens and help design a character, called Hettie the Hen, to feature in a new animation.

The animation is set in a fictional supermarket, where James' cartoon self is asked by his mum to choose a box of eggs. James reaches for a box of eggs from caged hens and Hettie appears - as if by magic - to tell him why he shouldn't buy them. She explains which eggs he should choose instead!

James, who voices his 'self' in the animation, is already familiar with farming, as his granny used to have a farm - and she kept hens. Perhaps his 'inside' knowledge gave him a head start in winning the competition!

"It's been such fun watching the cartoon take shape and I was really excited to be asked to do the voiceover for my character. I really hope it will help persuade people to choose eggs that come from hens that have had a happy life" said James.

The animation was launched during British Egg Week and you can see it here!
