A new theory by Harvard planetary scientists states that the Moon was formed 4.5 billion years ago after a planetary body half the size of Mars crashed into the Earth at 12 miles-per-second and instantly vaporized, but cleaved off a huge chunk of Earth down to its core and dispersed it into space. It was this cloud of Earth material that formed the Moon.
