Big data and supercomputing applications require immediate storage performance delivered efficiently. Disk storage performance has not kept pace with compute. Worse, the performance gap between compute and storage continues to widen. A new I/O performance model is needed to accelerate today’s data-driven and I/O-intensive workloads.

Cray has bridged the performance gap with a new I/O acceleration tier building on flash storage, solid-state disks and proven data virtualization software. This software solution must fuel the world’s most demanding and varied workloads, delivering application-ready I/O to high-velocity, data-driven workflows. In response to this need, Cray developed the DataWarp™ I/O acceleration system, engineered for the Cray® XC40™ supercomputer.

DataWarp technology delivers pure performance at near-zero latency through parallel I/O scaling. The DataWarp platform scales from 70,000 to 40,000,000 IOPS in a single system. Moreover, performance can be dedicated to individual applications, or shared globally across the supercomputer, providing quality of service storage performance to any application.

The DataWarp platform’s system architecture balances flexibility and optimal scalability through low-level integration, from compute to storage. Users can run a variety of I/O-hungry workloads in parallel without any user intervention or application modifications. The inherent flexibility of the DataWarp accelerator ensures cost-effective, balanced I/O for all applications. And this performance is globally shared so it can be flexibly allocated in a multitude of ways to meet the needs of varied workflows.

DataWarp technology increases storage utilization and maximizes system efficiency. The result is a total cost of performance that is five times less than disk-based systems. And overall machine efficiency can be increased by an average of 15 percent.

By minimizing reliance on disk-based systems, and instead using SSD and in-memory flash, the DataWarp accelerator reduces both total cost of ownership and cost per IOPS — up to four times over disk-based systems — while delivering 10 times the bandwidth.

With DataWarp technology, users get five times the performance of disk-based systems at the same cost. The Cray DataWarp applications I/O acceleration tier provides a completely integrated software solution for the world’s most demanding high performance computing applications and workflows.

Boost performance. Maximize system efficiency. Reduce total cost of ownership. Burst forward with Cray.
