IC 1101 is a supergiant elliptical galaxy at the center of the Abell 2029 galaxy cluster. It is 1.07 billion light years away in the constellation of Virgo and is classified as a cD class of galaxy.
The galaxy has a diameter of approximately 6 million light years, which makes it currently (as of 2012) the largest known galaxy in terms of breadth. It is the central galaxy of a massive cluster containing a mass (mostly dark matter) of roughly 100 trillion stars. Being more than 50 times the size of the Milky Way and 2000 times as massive, if it were in place of our galaxy, it would swallow up the Large Magellanic Cloud, Small Magellanic Cloud, Andromeda Galaxy, and Triangulum Galaxy. IC 1101 owes its size to many collisions of much smaller galaxies about the size of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

its actually ic1011 he correct
blobrana
Yeah, they got it wrong.
kyjive
He called it IC 1011, Its really galaxy IC 1101.
madcapper6
Sounds about right. If ic 1101 is 6 million light years across or has a radius of 3 million light years then Andromeda would be inside of it since Andromeda's about 2.5 million light years away. Mind boggling.

i read if you put ic 1101 where our galaxy is right now it would swallow up andromeda and triangulum galaxy thats how big this thing is... fuck.

If VY Canis Majoris is the biggest star in this pathetically small Milky Way galaxy, imagine how massive the biggest stars (and, solar systems and planets!) are in the IC 1101 Galaxy! I thought the Milky Way was just a little smaller than Andromeda and I thought that it also looked like Andromeda. All this time I thought our Milky Way looked like Andromeda! But the Milky Way looks different and is a lot smaller.. which is hard for me to take in right now.

Stars? What kind of life is there! And is it really bright? That is a hell of a lot of stars.
blobrana
Yeah, they got it wrong. I didn't notice at the time until it was pointed out to me. Now changed to the correct name.
