Sang By Chelsea Robinson

This song has the first five original verses of Amazing Grace as published in the 1779 Olney Hymns book. The last original verse;

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine

has been replaced with the more well-known final verse that starts; "When we've been there ten thousand years". This last verse was added to a version of "Amazing Grace" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, as it appears in her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

Amazing Grace was written by Rev. John Newton (July 24, 1725 -- Dec. 21, 1807) for a sermon he preached on January 1, 1773. At the time Rev. Newton was writing a new hymn for each of his sermons he preached.

The scripture text for that sermon was;

1 Chronicles 17:16,17
New International Version (NIV)
16 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said:
"Who am I, LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, LORD God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men."

In his sermon Rev. Newton focuses on the question "Who am I,". Without God we are, miserable, rebellious, and undeserving people.

He then goes on to show that, if we accept it, God will save us through his grace. God will plan a bright future for us as David states when he says, "you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, LORD God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men."

Rev. Newton called on God's mercy on March 21, 1748. He was so profoundly grateful for the mercy God showed him on that day, that he set it aside for prayer and fasting for the rest of his life.

This version of the song was sung by one of the Worship Leaders of our church, Chelsea Robinson.

I hope you enjoy it.
