Election officers are canvassing votes in Buncombe County. There is an extremely tight race up  for grabs.Less than a 100 votes separate 2 candidates for County Commission.    Today's canvass could decide that race..Democrat Ellen Frost and Republican Christina Kelly Merrill are in a battle down to the wire. The election night results for County Commission District 2 were extremely close.Republicans Mike Fryar and Christina Merrill won the two open seats. But Merrill and third place finisher Frost are separated by only 87 votes. That means the canvass of some 200 provisional ballots today could swing this election. Right now, the elections board is hearing challenges from a group that wants some of them thrown out.If after the canvass the difference in votes is not more than one percent of the total votes cast for the two candidates, then a recount can be requested. The candidate would have until 5 o'clock Monday to request a recount. Coming up later today, we'll have the official results of today's canvas.
