Exeter University has warned its students that cross dressing is as offensive as using black face, and that they should avoid doing it so that they would not offend trans gendered students and residents near the university. Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola discuss if this is a good move by Exeter.

Is cross dressing by university students as offensive as wearing black face? Should universities be advising their students against it? Let us know!

As a trans woman, I honestly don't see anything offensive about someone crossdressing. It's their freedom, and honestly anyone who does crossdress will probably end up being the victim of some harassment. It shows that they're willing to accept that to show support.

Some people, like me, like to cross dress just because that's also how they feel. It's just fashion, maybe they're not trying to mock them.

Fascinating. There is truly no limit to what can potentially offend someone. What I find interesting is the constant thread of "Its all about this or that group or about me". What is also particularly egregious in this case is that it's not even the group in question who has raised the issue. Yet rather another imperial court of moral guardians, in this case university officials, to pass judgement on right and wrong. No people, a cross dresser is not doing the activity to either support or offend you or anyone else. It's not all about you. The cross dresser like you the human individual seeks the same sense of emotional satisfaction that the transgendered desire. As we understand more about the gender variant , gender fluid and the transgendered, some of whom will make the choice if circumstances permit to have sexual reassignment surgery, we are, all of us now on what some say is the cusp of a gender revolution and, knowing who we are inside, feel it is particularly important not to regress back into the darkness caused by those who regard themselves as our cultural judges, in essence those who would make repression and misery the norm once again. The compulsion to cross dress is inborn and is exercised by most participants with discipline and caution if for no other reason than certainly to avoid violence. It is also done in a way so as not to make women feel uncomfortable when a cross dresser is shopping for clothes or going out at night. And with all that being said I am looking forward to seeing the Ab Fab movie in all its pansexual glory.

i chose NOT to wear a dress to school but i will choose to wear a skirt (just for fun)
What a joke. Exeter I mean not this cast!

If I as a gay man cross-dress and some trans-individual gets offended, fuck'em. The world doesn't have to mold to your feels...get over yourselves!
If a man or woman feeling comfortable enough with themselves to gussy up in drag offends someone, a person who otherwise is discomforted to the point of having to get surgery or whatever, then that's not necessarily the cross-dresser's fault.
Sasha Pants
Cross dressing has the same history as blackface, but not in regards to trans people. Women were not allowed to play themselves on stage for a long time, so men would dress in drag to portray them. I'm not against either but it's hypocritical and ignorant to treat one as awful and one as fine because one comes from racism and one comes from sexism.
what about monty python, that's the most extreme example. still don't think it's offensive.
Ryan Marshall
if being transgender is a mental problem then its not something you choose, you're contradicting yourself... you should probably CHOOSE your words better next time to save yourself from looking like a fool...And proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation wouldn't hurt either, by the way your ancestors were sold by your own people to the dutch so maybe you should be hating your own race in retrospect.
