Coppedge, a political science professor currently leading an international research team on the varieties of democracy, says democracy is difficult to break down into finer distinctions. When we measure democracy, we immediately run into a concept problem and a knowledge problem. People don't agree on what democracy is, which is understandable because democracy is an amalgam of different philosophical traditions that have been evolving for 2,500 years. He demonstrates new software to assist in measuring and drilling down into democracy in a variety of compelling ways.
