Suite Antique (1981), John Rutter (b. 1945); mvt. 1, Prelude
John Rutter, well-known for his choral works, found his inspiration for Suite Antique at a performance of J. S. Bach's Fifth Brandenburg Concerto. Paying homage to the composer, Rutter chose to revive forms common in the Baroque era, as well as to mimic Bach's original scoring. Bach scored the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto for flute, solo violin, harpsichord, and string orchestra; Rutter only omits the solo violin in his first version of Suite Antique, and later arranged the piece himself for solo flute and piano.
