"Revisiting the meaning of culture in academic writing and research and pedagogy"
The meanings attributed to the term culture vary considerably among research and practitioners alike, leading some to question whether culture is still a relevant concept in academic writing research and pedagogical practice. This presentation provides an overview of recent criticisms of the traditional notion of culture, typically defined in national terms, followed by a review of current approaches to reconceptualizing culture. The second part of the presentation considers the implications of these developments for our field. Types of culture that have particular relevance for first and second language academic writing teaching and research will be identified, illustrated with examples from recent empirical research and discussed from the pedagogical point of view.
