Upon looking at the title '90 +', one might pause to think, well, that's certainly an odd title for a piano piece, mightn't it be better suited to a sixth grader's pre-algebra homework?  This was written for Italian composer Goffredo Petrassi's 90th birthday.  The idea is for the work to be centered around ninety accented notes that continue to wend their way progressively through the chordal structures surrounding.  Think of it as each note representing a year in the life, each year attaining wisdom or propriety, a good year or a bad, but developing to create a well-rounded, fully matured human being.  Carter even goes so far as to allow the performer to play the last few notes as many times as he pleases, thus, '+'.
