What are smear slides and how are they useful in marine science? This video takes you through the step-by-step process of preparing a smear slide to determine the composition of deep-sea sediments. A small sample is collected and diluted on a glass slide, and then fixed using a special adhesive and UV lamp, to make it easier to look at the constituents of the sediment. Then, using a petrographic microscope, scientists can tease apart the various components, from microfossils to minerals, helping to make key interpretations while still at sea.
