"Civic Engagement through Social Media" was the second in a Speaker Series hosted by the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and designed especially for middle and high school students. The panel examined the role of social media in fostering civic engagement, and covered topics ranging from revolutions in the Middle East to American elections to grass roots organizing. Panelists include Kristen Cambell (Director of Programs and New Media, National Conference on Citizenship), Melissa Helmbrecht (Founder and CEO, Splashlife), Akili Lee (Director of Digital Strategy and Development, Digital Youth Network), and Andrew Slack (Founder and Executive Director, Harry Potter Alliance). A student audience submitted questions and reactions using Twitter, Facebook, and texting. Opening remarks were made by Melissa Giller, Director of Communications and Programs, Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The panel is moderated by Anthony Pennay, Program Manager of the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center.
