Nick Garner of SportsTalk4Kids (http://www.sportstalk4kids.com) recently spent a wonderful day with the athletes and volunteers at the 2012 Faley Games at Cal State Fullerton. The SpecialGames were created 27 years ago by Dan Faley, who was a student at Fullerton Cal State, for young people who are developmentally disabled. When his sister died in a car accident a year later, the Faley family established the Kathleen E. Faley Special Games. Students from local high schools, including Servite, Rosary, and Fullerton High School, volunteer their time to help the kids participate in events like basketball, baseball, running, soccer, a football throw, and an obstacle course. The volunteers outnumbered the students two to one, and they come from schools and organizations from all over Orange County, including the Notre Dame of Orange County (NDCOC) and Pet Prescription Therapy Dogs. It was an inspiring day to see how hard the athletes competed and how much the volunteers genuinely enjoyed helping the participants.
