Firefly is a kinetic sculpture by Ned Kahn of Sebastopol, CA. It shrouds the tower housing the wind turbines on the front of the new San Francisco PUC Building in San Francisco, CA. The building, designed by KMD/Stevens architects is targeted to be the greenest urban building in the US and is certified LEED Platinum. Firefly is 200 x 22 feet and is made up of 4 x 4 inch squares of polycarbonate and LEDs. The movement of the squares generates enough electricity to power the LEDs and illuminate the shimmering surface during the night. During the day it reminds one of a calm lake roughened by a capricious breeze Very cool.
