Is your water elevator broken? Minecraft update 1.6 brought about the end of boativators, water ladders, and many other glitch-dependent transportation systems like minecart boosters. This short video shows a WORKING rapid transit elevator system that you can use for the latest update. It is incredibly fast, compact (only 2x2 space is required!), and requires no maintenance whatsoever. It is easy to make and even easier to use.

The only real downside is that you need to craft ~15 minecarts for a full bedrock-to-surface elevator, which translates to roughly ~75 iron. I think it's well worth it, and if you've been playing for very long, you should have at least one or two 64-stacks of iron.

Make sure you craft a "dismount cart" at the top of your shaft so that you can easily exit the elevator upon reaching the top.

Another huge benefit of this style is that you can stop at any level you wish to dismount, making it perfect for apartment-style complexes, multi-level mineshafts, or any other design that might require a stop on the way up.

Please note that I did not invent this style of elevator, all credit goes to those who did, although I can't be certain who thought of it first. (Probably Etho)
