Fairview Health Services in conjunction with Minnesota Waste Wise and PPL Industries set out to recycle sterilization "blue" wrap at Fairview Hospitals. Blue wrap covers operating room supplies in the sterilization process. The partners worked with the hospital to develop a recycling program for the material. The program has collected more than 60,000 pounds of blue wrap and 570,000 pounds of solid waste has been reduced since the program began. With the savings from reduced solid waste taxes, Fairview Health Services can pay their recycling crews a fair wage for their work, and the commingled and blue wrap recycling doesn't cost the facility anything. Fairview Health Services is still able to save about $4,700 annually, making their program better than cost-neutral and ensuring the recycling crews will continue to be employed.
