Dr Julie Schell demonstrates the advantages of Life Jackets for dogs. Many dogs enjoy swimming, which can be excellent exercise if performed with some safety measures. These include:
1. Find safe areas for your pet to swim. Rapids and very deep and large lakes are dangerous. Oceans can also be dangerous due to waves.
2. Place a Life Jacket on your dog when he/she is on a boat or swimming. Be sure the life jacket fits appropriately.
3. For safe exercise, you can attach a long, thick leash to the life jacket so that you can walk along the bank as your dog swims in the water, but close to the bank. That way he /she will not swim out too far. If unleashed in the water, a dog is able to swim clear across a river or pond, making it challenging for you to retrieve him/her.
4. You dog should be bathed in fresh water after swimming. This is because the water can be very dirty with bacteria, parasites, fungus. It is best to rid the coat of this to prevent irritations and allergic reactions.
