The Detroit Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Michigan National Guard, City of Detroit Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Michigan Department of Community Health will participate in a railcar accident/hazardous material emergency exercise on Friday, March 14, at the CN/Conrail Rail Yard, located at the intersection of Mt. Elliott and Lynch streets beginning at 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The exercise will began with the Detroit Fire Department responding to an explosion at the CN rail yard at 8 a.m. All participating agencies will work together to perform situational assessment of a hazardous materials release from a railcar, control the release, and determine the magnitude of threat to the surrounding community.

The objective of the exercise is to assess the capability of local, regional, state, and federal response personnel to detect, identify, monitor, and respond to a release of an unknown hazardous material.
