In December 2010, Marrickville Council became the first local council in Australia to support the Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. Through the council's longstanding sister city relationship with Bethlehem, many of the councillors had seen first hand the injustices suffered by Palestinians in their daily life.

Several months of intense media attention, political pressure and personal threats to the councillors followed. In April 2011, Council voted to maintain the original decision to support the BDS but also decided not to follow through with action.

I live in Marrickville. I feel passionately for the plight of the Palestinians - the forced home demolitions, the wall that snakes through their communities, the exclusion from Jewish-only roads, the many checkpoints and road blockages that make daily life difficult and unpredictable.

I am really proud that my council took this stand .

It in no way is a stand against the right of Israel to exist; it is simply a stand in favour of the rights of the Palestinian people.
