Avanti's Learning Centers provide low-income high-school students a world-class science and mathematics education. Our centers have no trained teachers and very little conventional lecturing. In their place, we focus on teaching students how to learn from books and their peers -- resources that are more abundant, accessible and consistent in quality.

ConcepTests form a core part of how we teach. After completing assigned pre-reading material students are taken through a series of conceptual questions. Each question tests a single concept and has 3-4 plausible answers. Students first think by themselves and pick one option. They are then encouraged to discuss their answers and try to convince their peers. After this period of discussion they vote again.

Designed by Prof. Eric Mazur's group at Harvard University, ConcepTests are an excellent way to build engagement, push collaborative learning and drive conceptual clarity throughout the class.
