The hits just keep on coming for Paul Mealor. He arrived seemingly out of nowhere when his choral composition Ubi caritas became the surprise sensation of Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in April.
This triggered worldwide attention, a deal with Decca, and a new album, A Tender Light, which was released last month and went to the top of the classical charts.
Still glowing beneath the royal halo, Mealor may be about to find himself in the unlikely position of being the composer of the Christmas number one. He wrote Wherever You Are for Gareth Malone's recent BBC Two series The Choir: Military Wives, and, boosted by their performance of it at the Festival of Remembrance at the Albert Hall, and with enthusiastic plugging from Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, the song is gathering enormous popular support.
Bookmakers have it at 8/13 to top the yuletide chart, which would upset the annual ritual of the X Factor winner bagging the top spot. The fact that all proceeds from the single will go to the Royal British Legion and SSAFA Forces Help lends an additional sheen of seasonal goodwill to the project
