The Poetry Festival Words in Action took place on Sunday 2 August 2009 in Museum Africa, Newtown, Johannesburg as part of Khanya Annual Winter School 2009. Poetry performers and musicians from Johannesburg and southern Africa (Swaziland, Zimbabwe) gathered for a full day of music, spoken word and poetry performances, with Prince Shapiro, Ras Zwesh, Linda Gabrielle (Zimbabwe), Robert Berold, Allan Horwitz, Nathan Chakuchichi, Menzi Mbonami, Dolla I, Katlego Gabashane, ZEE, Icebound, Ancients, Skin2Skin, Nancy (Swaziland) and many more.

Khanya Annual Winter School 2009 focussed on Crisis and Resistance and took place from 30 July to 9 August in various venues in Johannesburg, South Africa. The education festival invites activists to attend conferences, participate in sectoral networks of resistance meetings as well as skills for resistance workshops, an NGO fair, the first Jozi Book Fair and cultural interventions such as a film festival, a theatre festival, a spoken word festival, and public seminars.
These cultural interventions aim to use poetry, creative writing, music, visual art, film and theatre as popular education mediums and to provide space for local artists outside the mainstream to showcase their work. Also, they were devised to provide a platform for linkages between progressive artists and the social movements and thus to contribute to the emergence of a progressive and radical cultural movement and to build a broad radical social justice movement.
