This new sap sucker is from Central America or Mexico and arrived in the Naples area in late 2011. There are up to 90 plants it will attack and the list keeps growing! This whitefly is not a killer like the ficus whitefly. However, it is a mess-maker. Resorts and homeowners alike are burdened with almost daily cleanup of lanais or deck areas due to the sticky honeydew, waxy debris and unsightly sooty mold that collects on objects beneath infested trees. But not to panic, this pest can be subdued, so that you have less mess. You don't need to remove your coconut palms or other trees. See details in this video filmed in Naples in early April 2012 by our most excellent MasterGardener videography team!
