In October 2013, Global Green USA, with the support of IKEA and the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation, announced the Red Hook Recreation Center as the recipient of the first, official 'Solar For Sandy' install.
'Solar For Sandy' will bring renewed resilience to the Red Hook community as it continues to recover from the superstorm. This is the first of five community facilities in New York/New Jersey that will receive grid-tied, back-up solar energy systems. We also conducted a pilot install in Far Rockaway, NY last summer.
'Solar for Sandy' installations will help mitigate future power blackouts and provide access to critical resilience features, including: a safe, lit and centrally-located community gathering point; heating/cooling/ventilation; communications services (charge cell phones and laptops); energy-efficient lights; and refrigeration. Furthermore, the solar system will produce energy every day, and lower energy bills, allowing savings to benefit other neighborhood services.
Global Green USA announced its commitment to help low-income areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy at the recent Clinton Global Initiative in June 2013.
