In the early l970's, Daniel Erdely discovered the spiraling polygon and named is a spidron . Erdely is a Hungarian industrial designer that popularized the figure made up of isosceles right triangles and equilateral triangles. The isosceles right triangle has a 30, 60, and 90 angles within it. Sitting on the isosceles right triangle is the equilateral triangle. The pattern repeats. Taking 6 spidrons we can fill in a hexagon completely. An article in Science News caught my attention and hence the quilt resulted!
