The entire animation is created only using a 4 key-frame walk cycle. Physics (PhysX) takes care of the rest. Instead of direct control, the animation keys drive the "intention" of the spider. i.e. The spider's joints apply forces in an attempt to achieve the walk, but is subject to physical forces and constraints.
Among other things while i worked for Ageia, I developed the drive model for the PhysX 6dof joint as well as the 3dsmax plugin. I made this "programmer art" scene to show off the potential of physically based animation. Finally, I just added some music I wrote for fun.
