Water draining counter clockwise in Los Angeles, California. It's a myth that water spirals down the drain in a certain direction depending on which hemisphere you are in.

People are probably mixing this up with the Coriolis effect which applies to storms. Storms swirl clockwise in the Southern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, but the direction of water going down your drain depends more on your plumbing than it does which hemisphere you live in.
