This is one of my mini projects: A 555 Timer frequency generator oscillating at 85 Hz, is switching a fast switching MOSFET 85 times a second from 0 to 9V. This is fed to a transformer which gives an average of 200V. This is then fed to a 5 stage Voltage Multiplier, giving more than 3000V. You can see the gap between the output wires is one centimeter. (Air voltage breakdown is approximately 3000V per 1centimeters).
