A team of scientists at UNC-Chapel Hill have been able to create a synthetic particle that has many of the same traits as natural red blood cells. Graduate student and researcher Timothy Merkel talks about the discovery and the potential it could have for improving human health. Merkel is a student of Joseph DeSimone, Chancellor's Eminent Professor of Chemistry at UNC. The synthetic blood research was featured in a major discussion on innovation and the future of the American economy.
