A parody of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know." Beware: This song is extremely nerdy. It's also about grammar. You've now been sufficiently warned.
Now and then I think of how it's come to reign
That sentence structure fills our lives with so much pain
Some people just like to pick fights
And have arguments to fill their nights
But others realize that proper grammar is just polite
You can get addicted to a certain kind of syntax
Like ending sentences with prepositions
Poetic license is all well and fine
But there are places where I draw the line
In fear that our language is degenerating
Because I care about how we speak
I'm going to get flak for this and be called a geek
And though some of this is tongue and cheek
I really believe our English skills are becoming weak
And I think that it was quite a low
When someone decided to coin the term 'YOLO'
These colloquialisms need to go
Why isn't this "Somebody Whom I Used to Know"?
'Whom' and 'that' are both relative pronouns
But they're used differently when speaking about people or things
My patience only goes so far
When this language you start to mar
I've been told just to let it go
Yet I remain hung up on "Somebody That I Used to Know"
