Based on my best drive-by journalism and a follow-up, I've concluded that John Steinbeck probably stayed at the Westgate Motel when he came to Beach, ND, on Oct. 12, 1960. This is a video of the intersection on U.S. 10 that once included a Dairy Queen diagonally across from the Westgate. Steinbeck joked to his wife in a letter from Beach that he was staying at a Dairy Queen motel. I mistakenly call the Westgate Motel the "Westlake" in this video's narration, but that's because at this point in my trip I was semi-deranged.
