I was brought in as the fourth editor to take a stab at this comedy featuring Johnny Starr - double N, double R - an Elvis-wannabe preacher.
The producer, writer and star, John Carmen, had creative differences with the first director, who insisted on filming the story as a drama. The first cut of the film was a horribly long 150 minutes.
It was then recut to 90 minutes, still too long.
Then, Carmen decided it might make a better sitcom pilot and had it recut to a jarringly short 24 minutes.
I came in to return to the original footage and recut it from scratch, trying to focus on the comedy without losing touch with the plot. I came up with a brisk 75 minute running time. It played on TV and had a brief theatrical run, but never made any money. Last I saw, they were trying to repackage it as a webcast sitcom.
