This video presents a tour and pirouette combination by Mikhail Baryshnikov and Leonid Sarafanov.
A double tour/pirouette combination puts together double tour en l’air landing in fifth postion followed by a pirouette, with the dancer repeating the sequence. The step is difficult because the dancer must securely land on the tour in a tight fifth position and quickly perform a pirouette, followed by another double tour. Any imperfection in the tour will throw off the pirouette. Less proficient dancers will compromise technique by landing the tour in an open fifth position (feet separated) to provide more stability and momentum into the tour. The step is prominent in George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations.
