A project put together for my studies in Archaeology at Nottingham University
Music Video: Delo
Come with me as we take a look back
through time and space.
So what would we know about ourselves
If not for archaeology and studyin' past philosophy?
Cos everything that's under out feet came before us
I'm busy lookin' for the secrets of life they never taught us
And every thought you thought you thought of
Has been thought before, lookin' back a little more
You're only here because your mothers and your fathers are gone
So listen up and take heed to the words.
I come from cold nights in a cave with hand axes
When dreadlocks made fire without matches
When everything in nature had a god and there was no famine
We used to rap about the catch of the week
The moon sun and the seasons, looking for reasons
Got me talking to a snake about some apples he's eating
But my father used to know about farming
He warned us, manipulating the earth'll get us kicked out of the garden
We lost orientation and the virtue of patience
And wound up stuck in civilizations
My crew was all prophets and bards
Talkin' about death love and what made life hard
And then a couple went left, left a couple right
But if my brother had a lyre we'd be round the fire all night
Talking about the wars and fights
And looking back gave the Oracle foresight.
I'm steady starin' at the world through my rear-view
Battled the best from Shakespeare to Sun Tzu
Wrote Gilgamesh, the Vedas, Iliad and the Odyssey
Ramayana and even Mahabharata
Travelled the face of the planet looking for listeners
And even had a chance to politick with Herodotus
From Africa through Mesopotamia to the West
And East, walked for thousands of years on the same streets
Found my feet in the south Bronx
Listenin' to the breaks and reminiscing of greats
Then I started to appear everywhere that you could imagine
Pants saggin' and braggin' about how I'm swagin' but now I'm bruk
But there will always be another poet, another storyteller
And there will always be a story to tell
You can back track to Beowulf to 'Check my Melody'
Remember you're the product of a legacy.
