This is a perfect example of a soprano singing quite capably in the face of idiotic conducting. Throughout the aria you will hear bizarre conducting choices such as, angular interpretation within Viennese music, out of control dynamics, and a final tempo rush meant only to throw off the performer. From what I can deduce, this conductor was more maus than maestro, worried about ego rather than art. Listen to how Ms. South gives the villainous Maestro a resounding operatic middle finger with her sustained high D, rather than the traditional Hungarian style quick cutoff. In case you were wondering, the putz behind the baton was Alexander Sander who?
