LEA GRUNDIG WAS BORN AS LEA LANGER IN DRESDEN, WHERE SHE ATTENDED THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS. DURING THAT TIME SHE ALSO MET HER HUSBAND, THE PAINTER HANS GRUNDIG, AND THE COUPLE DEVOTED THEIR EFFORTS TO SOCIAL ART, PARTICULARLY EXTOLLING COMMUNIST IDEALISM.

LEA GRUNDIG GAINED THE REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE MOST EXCELLENT ETCHING ARTISTS IN GERMANY OF THE 1930S. SHE WAS DEDICATED TO REALISTIC REPRESENTATION OF THE HORRORS AND EVILS OF THE GROWING FASCIST MOVEMENT (IN THE “NEW OBJECTIVITY” STYLE), AS WELL AS THE SUFFERING OF THE JEWS. IN 1940 SHE MANAGED TO IMMIGRATE TO PALESTINE AS A SURVIVOR FROM THE “PATRIA” REFUGEE SHIP.

ASSUMING THAT HER HUSBAND LOST HIS LIFE IN THE SACHSENHAUSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP, LEA MOVED TO TEL AVIV WITH ART COLLECTOR AND INDUSTRIALIST NACHUM EITAN. LEA WENT ON TO CREATE MANY INK DRAWINGS CULMINATING IN A CYCLE NAMED “IN THE VALLEY OF DEATH” DEPICTING THE HOLOCAUST. SUBSEQUENTLY, MOST OF HER ACTIVITIES IN ISRAEL FOCUSED ON CHILDREN’S BOOKS ILLUSTRATIONS, DRAWINGS OF LOCAL LANDSCAPES AND LIFE SCENES, AS WELL AS PORTRAITS OF MOTHERS AND CHILDREN.

IN 1948, NOT LONG AFTER SHE LEARNED THAT HER HUSBAND SURVIVED THE CONCENTRATION CAMP, LEA LEFT ISRAEL AND RETURNED TO DRESDEN IN THE EAST GERMANY. THERE SHE WAS RECOGNIZED AS A VERY IMPORTANT, COURAGEOUS AND HUMANISTIC ARTIST, WHO DEDICATED HER LIFE TO PROMOTE HUMAN VALUES. SHE BECAME THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF VISUAL ARTISTS IN THE G.D.R AND THE FIRST FEMALE PROFESSOR AT THE DRESDEN ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS.
