NESCAFÉ® has a history of working directly with farmers around the globe since 1962.

Since 1994, we have trained 62,000 farmers in agronomy.

Under The NESCAFÉ Plan we will extend our technical assistance programme, providing advice on farming and post harvest practices to over 10,000 coffee farmers per year.

We have also invested significantly in developing coffee trees that offer farmers better yields. These coffee trees have been selected for their excellent pedigree which means they can produce greater volumes of coffee beans and can have a greater built in tolerance to disease.

These coffee trees together with good farming practices can help farmers improve their production and increase their income.

Over the last 10 years, NESCAFÉ has distributed over 16 million high yield coffee plantlets across the globe.

Under The NESCAFÉ Plan, a further 220 million trees will be distributed by 2020.

Through The NESCAFÉ Plan, we'll be working with the Rainforest Alliance, the Sustainable Agriculture Network and 4C (Common Code for Coffee Community) with the aim of demonstrating how the traditional techniques of farmers can be coupled with modern methods to help farmers improve their quality and yield while reducing their environmental impact.

We have already undertaken projects to train farmers in farming practices that adhere to the 4C Code of Conduct. The 4C Code encourages members to engage in farming practices which include baseline requirements for the sustainable production of coffee.

This means we can help farmers reduce their environmental impact whilst still producing great tasting coffee.

One farmer who has benefited from such training is Gerardo Areas from Nicaragua.

Thanks to NESCAFÉ and the Rainforest Alliance, he was taught the principles of the 4C Code of Conduct.
