Acclaimed New York Mets player Carlos Beltran joined in efforts with leading food manufactures: Goya Foods and City Harvest to distribute 20,000 pounds of food to eager Bronx residents in light of the approaching holiday season.

Acclaimed New York Mets player Carlos Beltran endured the bitter winter frost as he stood outside the Community League of the Heights facility in the Bronx, New York to personally hand out thousands of packaged food to hundreds of New Yorkers.

[Carlos Beltran, New York Mets player]:
"It really means a lot, I think that when you see people coming here in this cold weather, it really shows you that there is a necessity and when you contribute in one way to give back it keeps you humble."

Prominent food company Goya was one of the first to step forward and contribute to the cause, being an occasional participator in both local and international donations.

[Olga Luz Tirados, Goya Foods representative]:
"Goya Foods, whenever there is a need, we make sure that we are there and we are donating food. Of course, during the holidays it is certainly more festive and so we certainly want to make sure people don't go hungry, especially during the holidays. Its not just about the holidays, it's all year round. Goya is always there. "For today, we're donating 20,000 lbs of food to feed the hungry through City Harvest."

Partnering with Goya today was City Harvest who has also been steadfastly providing food and aid.

[Shannon Barbuto, Director of Food Sourcing]:
"City Harvest is the first food rescue organization in the country, we've been serving to help hungry New Yorkers for over 25 years.
We deliver to nearly 600 community food programs throughout the city, throughout all five boroughs and we do have a number of special events like this for special distribution, especially around the holidays."

Amongst the happy receivers was Nicasio Flete.."Here they give something out every week, and it's very important for us because we're very poor. We feel very happy. I'm very pleased because this helps my entire family pull through. It's a little cold today, but we're here."

[Juana Vera, Bronx resident]:
"Very happy."

[Bronx resident]:
"I get it for the old folks in my neighborhood that don't have a chance to get up here and get it."

And the beloved Mets also haven't fallen behind with their charity work.

[Carlos Beltran, New York Mets player]:
"No, the Mets have really been involved every year. Every year there have been different players who do different things. Today a couple of guys visited a hospital, being with kids. We try to spread ourselves around the city to do different things."

Thanks to the generous efforts of Goya, City Harvest and the Nets, residents of New York will hopefully be able to spend a warmer and more blissful holiday season.
