This was a launch title for the Playstation. This was also developed by Sony's own internal studio. Back then, Sony Interactive Studios made some of the best games around. I first played this game on the demo disc that came with my Playstation. It had only one track and you could only use roller blades. I played the demo over and over again until I finally just bought it. Not even the demo did this game justice. This game is so so so much fun to play. The wipeouts are absolutely hysterical, and if you're not wiping out the computer is.
Most who have never seen this game before will most likely compare it to Road Rash. However there are many dynamics to this game that clearly separate this title from Road Rash. First, you have your choice of 4 different vehicles. A street luge, bike, skate board , and roller blades. Also you'll notice the gates that I sometimes pass through. The green gates are instant cash bonuses, the purple gates activate various items on the course. The yellow gates are there for extra challenge. If you pass through every gate, you get to collect a ton of extra money in the cash course which will help you to buy faster rides. My capture is by no means a perfect run, but I like how it shows how fast your position can change and shows alot of wiping out on both mine and the computer's part. No need for any kind of comedic commentary, this game is hilarious on it's own. This game is perfect. Ultra fun gameplay, excellent graphics, smooth frame rate, fantastic sound and some of the best music in the industry. The sequels known as 2 Xtreme and 3 Xtreme failed to capture the first game's magic IMO. By the time the 3rd game had rolled out the 2D sprite based characters were replaced with 3D polygonal characters that just didn't seem as responsive, and just looked stupid. ESPN Extreme Games became 1 Xtreme after the license to use the ESPN name expired. However it is the exact same game.
