Syria: Christians attend Easter festivities despite security concerns

Hundreds of Christians attended mass at the Church of the Holy Cross in Damascus on Saturday. Gathering outside the church, a crowd of followers amassed before taking a seat inside for the service. The event combined both Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday festivities due to security concerns.

Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in March 2011, organisations such as International Christian Concern as well as Christian authorities within Syria such as Giuseppe Nazarro, the Vicar Catholic Apostolic of Aleppo, have complained of persecution. Up to 600,000 Christians have been displaced, including 159,000 from Homs alone.

Christians form around 10% of the Syrian Arab Republic's population.
