The second The Maritime Standard Tanker Conference took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Dubai, on 24th October, with a full house in attendance. The event attracted a top quality audience of more than 150 people, including delegates from all the leading tanker owners and operators from across the region.
The packed Conference hall heard from a host of top speakers from different segments of the tanker business and support sectors. Key themes included optimism about the potential that exists for growth and development within the region’s tanker sector and the need for close collaboration between different stakeholders, to create the foundations for sustainable success.
The two keynote speeches were given by H.E. Sheikh Talal Al Khaled Al Sabah, chief executive of Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) and Abdullah Bin Damithan, commercial director, DP World. Both set the tone for an enlightening day. Headline speakers in the first session, who discussed the key political and economic factors affecting the tanker market, included Chris Peters, chief executive, Emirates Ship Investment Company; Gaurav Moolwaney, executive director, Standard Chartered; Ali Shehab, deputy CEO, KOTC; and Philip Tinsley maritime security manager at BIMCO.
The second session focused on the challenges and opportunities facing the market. Highlights included presentations from PetrosDoukas, chairman of Capital Partners and former Greek Finance Minister; Tarik Al Juneidi, chief executive, Oman Shipping Company; Omar Abu Omar, president, maritime and operations, Gulf Navigation; Captain Harihar Prasad, managing director, McQuilling Shipping Services Dubai; and Roger Harfouch, regional director, Marlink Communications.
A final session on the need to build maritime clusters of services and expertise, chaired by Richard Briggs, executive parter, Hadef& Partners, heard about the importance of the new Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre. Other speakers included Dr Ruanthi De Silva, chief executive of SCM Plus; Thomas Kriwat, chief executive, Mercmarine; Lakshmi Janarthanan, commercial director of Drydocks World Dubai; Ralph Becker, regional business development manager, DNV GL; and Katherine Yakunchenkova, general manager, Al Safina Security. The event rounded up with an opportunity for speakers and attendees to network informally at a special reception.

The third annual The Maritime Standard Tanker Conference will take place on Tuesday 16th October at the Atlantis hotel, the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. The first two events were both extraordinarily successful and as a result a new, and much larger venue has been chosen to host the Conference, which is already established as one of the leading events on the tanker shipping calendar.
