Moss thrives in shady areas, acidic soil, and areas with excessive moisture. Take these steps to control and remove moss and prevent it from returning.

Step 1: Use bleach and water solution
Combat moss on concrete, brick, and stone walkways by scrubbing them with a solution of 3/4 cup chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water. Make as much of this solution as you need to clear away all of your paths.

Moss can be very slick and dangerous on walkways.

Step 2: Prune trees and shrubs
Prune trees and shrubs that hang over your lawn, garden, or flower bed to allow more sunlight.

Step 3: Remove moss from grass
Remove moss from the grass in your yard by applying an organic moss and algae killer. You can also remove the moss by scraping it off the soil with a shovel.

Algae killer can be purchased at your local garden center.

Step 4: Keep moss away
Keep moss away from your grass by loosening the compacted soil with a garden fork. Then add soil conditioner and grass seed.

Step 5: Improve fertility and regulate moisture
Improve the soil's fertility and ability to regulate moisture by adding one to two inches of compost to your flower bed.

Step 6: Remove moss from shingles
Remove moss from roof shingles by scrubbing them with a brush. Use a solution of equal parts bleach and water to clean the shingles.

Be careful not to get the bleach solution on the grass or in flower beds.

Step 7: Rinse the shingles
Rinse the shingles with water. Keep the roof clean from debris and you'll be sitting in sunshine when the moss stays away.
