Dr. Damara Gutnick is a primary care physician and member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. In this video she shares a personal story of her interactions with Mr. Smith - a heavy smoker who she has cared for for over 15 years. Despite Dr. Gutnick's multiple attempts to motivate Mr. Smith to quit smoking, he was never interested until Dr. Gutnick incorporated Motivational Interviewing and Brief Action Planning into her clinical encounter. Use of MI and BAP techniques were successful in motivating Mr. Smith to make a specific action plan around his smoking.©

"Brief Action Planning (BAP) is a self-management support tool based on the principles and practice of Motivational Interviewing that was developed by Steven Cole, with contributions from Damara Gutnick, Connie Davis, and Kathy Reims. For more information about BAP see http://www.CentreCMI.ca
