The early morning hours of April 13th were a busy time for the Detroit Fire Department.
The first fire at Kenney & Gilbo was dispatched as a re-kindle from earlier in the evening but when Firefighters arrived on scene, the house was fully involved. Hot embers from the wind fanned flames could be seen falling on an adjacent house and dry spring grass in nearby fields. Firefighters remained on the scene for over 2 hours washing down hot spots.
The second fire was phoned in at 1:16am with the report of a house fire at Lemay & Shoemaker, also on the east side. The fire appeared to have started in either the 2nd floor or attic and when DFD arrived, black smoke was billowing out the upper floor windows and roof vents. Crews worked to put the fire out but flames became too intense and the Battalion Chief ordered everyone off the roof. As seen in the video, the occupied house next door almost caught on fire. With the hard work of Detroit's Bravest, this fire was quickly brought under control.
It's unknown if there were any injuries to Firefighters or civilians.
