In its political and diplomatic action, the Holy See defends ethical principles, and has neither economic nor commercial interests. The Holy See raises its voice in defense of the rights of the poor, the unborn, and those who suffer unjust discrimination. These were some of the issues on which Pope Benedict XVI touched in his remarks to the new Ambassador to the Holy See from the Netherlands, Joseph Weterings, who presented his letters of credence on Friday at the Vatican. The Holy Father added that he appreciated the commitment of the Dutch government to the defense of religious freedom, and recalled that the Catholic Church works for the common good and the promotion of the human person.
