In Buddhism, death lies at the beginning of a new life, a rebirth on the long path toward ultimate enlightenment.

The rites of death, in the Khumbu region of Nepal, near the base of Mount Everest, demonstrate a deep-rooted belief of the natives, and the hope for a better life after death in the impressive rituals of the four-day festival of MANI RIMDU.

Norman G. Dyhrenfurth succeeded in capturing those rites with his camera. The viewer witnesses, in tranquil and sensibly observed pictures the strange funeral cult with originally-recorded sound, in a meditatively overwhelming form, as can only rarely be conveyed in television. color.
